I’m just now watching an entertaining TV show on Planet Green, one of Discovery Channel’s sub-stations. It’s an episode of “Out of Egypt”, discussing the origin of the Devil, and explaining how the “evil” gods in Egypt weren’t truly evil. I was happy that they didn’t paint Set as a demon, but they definitely missed the mark with Mut. They started by saying that Mut was worshipped at Karnak, with a violent manifestation of Sekhmet – which got me all excited! They went on to say that Mut needed to be appeased with beer, lest She turn against Her worshippers.
Something tells me they were looking at Sekhmet-Mut there, and didn’t realize it. It’s interesting to compare concepts of good and evil across cultures, at any rate.
